Memories of John Sullivan
JOHN MICHAEL SULLIVAN\r\nis honored on Panel 31W, Row 59 of\r\nthe Vietnam Veterans Memorial.\r\n\r\nDate of Birth: 12/11/1946\r\nDate of Casualty: 2/25/1969\r\nHome of Record: EL CAJON\r\nCounty of Record: SAN DIEGO COUNTY\r\nState: CA\r\nBranch of Service: NAVY\r\nRank: HM3\r\nCasualty Country: SOUTH VIETNAM\r\nCasualty Province: QUANG TRI\r\nJohn was a Navy Corpsman with the 3d Battalion, 12th Marines which held Fire Support Base Neville, located atop Hill 1103.\r\nOn 25 February 1969, Neville was under attack by some 200 sappers from the 246th NVA Regiment. After infiltrating the concertina wire on the west side of the perimeter, the sappers crisscrossed that portion of the base occupied by 1st Platoon and Battery G’s number six gun pit. Tossing satchel charges, they forced the defenders into bunkers, which they then destroyed. “Only through heroic efforts were the positions defended and the NVA finally repulsed.” ( from Marine Corps Assoc. & Foundation blog)\r\nI read that John Sullivan gave his life in order that others would live, be rescued from this horrific battle. 13 others lost their lives that night at this Fire Support Base along with 29 others ten kilometers to the east at Fire Support Base Russell that same night.\r\n\r\nThank you, John, for your service as a Corpsman who helped and cared for so many others. \r\n\r\nI knew you in the band. You played the drums. You always had a smile and a twinkle in your eyes, if my memory serves me well now.
